About the Comprehensive Assessment

There is no need to be nervous or apprehensive about your comprehensive assessment. It is simply a physical and psychological exam that helps us determine your needs for detox. During the assessment you will need to provide details about your health history, current and previous drug use, any substance abuse treatment history and the symptoms you’ve experienced due to your drug use. A licensed clinician will also ask you a few questions to more accurately assess your dependence on drugs and/or alcohol.

Your personal assessment will also include a physical examination to check for any physical signs of addiction and co-existing health problems that could require a more complex detox program.

It is extremely important that we collect as much information from you as possible and it is in your best interest to provide the most accurate and honest information you can. This is what allows us to develop a personalized treatment plan that will most effectively help you with your ongoing recovery.

Potential Co-Occurring Disorders

Addiction and substance abuse are sometimes coupled with additional disorders and diseases. In some cases, we may discover a co-existing disorder that will impact the duration and specifics of your detox protocol. These may include:

  • Malnutrition
  • Eating disorders
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Why We Require a Comprehensive Assessment for Detox

  1. To determine whether an addiction is present.
  2. To assess the extent of the addiction, if present.
  3. To determine the duration of your detox program.
  4. To determine which tapering medications should be used and the appropriate dosage.
  5. To ensure your detox is safe.

Benefits of An In-Depth Assessment for Detox Programs

An in-depth assessment is not only a necessary component of any high-quality detox program, but it also provides a number of benefits for each one of our clients.

First and foremost, the main goal of detox is to fully overcome your physical dependence on an addictive substance. Without the comprehensive assessment, we would not have the information required to achieve this.

Additionally, the assessment allows us to uncover any previously undetected diseases, viruses or mental disorders. Treating these is just as important as treating your addiction because they may inhibit your recovery treatment and increase your risk for relapse.

Your assessment will also give us the information we need to tailor your care to your needs so it is comfortable and safe. During detox, we will taper down your withdrawal symptoms and ease you into a stable, sober state. Once you have reached this state, you can begin preparing for entry into an addiction rehab program.

Last but not least, beginning each detox program with a comprehensive personal assessment increases the likeliness for long-term recovery by addressing all aspects of your physical and psychological needs.
